Maintenance Engineer
Location: Christchurch, Canterbury
Rate: $39 – $45 per hour + Paid Overtime after 40 hours
Hours: 6.30am – 4pm, Mon – Fri + Occasional Saturday when the mill is not running (Some flexibility on start times for the right person)
Our client is a well-established, family-owned sawmill based in Christchurch, operating both wet and dry mill processes from raw logs through to treatment and finished timber products. Despite being a smaller team, they run large-scale operations with a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and teamwork.
Due to continued growth, they are looking for an experienced Maintenance Engineer to join the team.
About the Role
This is a hands-on role working across a wide range of automated and manual sawmill machinery and equipment. You’ll be responsible for preventative maintenance, breakdown response, repairs, and supporting project engineering work across the site.
The environment is fast-paced and varied, making this a great opportunity for someone who enjoys practical problem-solving and taking ownership of machinery performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Preventative maintenance across plant and machinery
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical breakdowns
- Fault finding and troubleshooting production equipment
- Working on conveyors, motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, sawmill equipment, and treatment systems
- Assisting with project engineering and machinery improvements
- Supporting production teams to minimise downtime
- Ensuring all work is completed safely and efficiently
What We’re Looking For
- Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, Fitting & Turning, or similar
- Strong mechanical maintenance and fault-finding experience
- Experience working within manufacturing, industrial, timber, sawmill, or heavy production environments
- Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, bearings, gearboxes, conveyors, pumps, and motors
- Welding and fabrication experience advantageous
- Exposure to automated machinery and electrical fault finding highly regarded
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude
- Reliable, practical, and safety focused
Must Have
- Valid New Zealand working rights
- Currently located within New Zealand
