Our client is a well-established, 100% locally owned building and trade supplies business with a strong reputation for quality products, expert knowledge and outstanding customer service. They’re growing their yard and inwards goods team and are looking for multiple people across a range of levels – from solid all-round yard hands through to standout forklift operators and an inwards goods/inventory superstar.
 
Rather than running separate ads, they’re bringing everyone together under one team. Depending on your strengths, you could slot into:

• Yard Person / Yard Hand – customer-facing, forklift work, loading/unloading and keeping the yard running smoothly.
• Forklift Specialist – focused on safe, efficient unloading of goods and being the “go-to” machine operator.
• Inwards Goods / Inventory Controller – computer-based receiving, stock control, supplier communication and system accuracy.

The roles at a glance,
 
Yard Person / Yard Hand
You’ll be the face of the yard for tradies and contractors, mixing it with customers, running the forklift, loading/unloading building materials and keeping the place tidy and safe.
 
Key duties:

• Greeting customers, taking orders and providing product suggestions.
• Picking, packing and preparing orders for pickup and delivery.
• Loading and unloading trucks and customer vehicles.
• Operating a forklift safely and efficiently.
• General yard housekeeping and maintaining a safe work area.
• Working outdoors in all weather, on your feet all day.

Ideal background:

• Previous yard, building supplies, timber merchant or trade environment experience.
• Current forklift licence with solid operational experience.
• Full NZ Class 1 licence (manual and automatic).
• Strong customer service skills and confidence talking to tradies.
• Physically fit, reliable and safety-minded.

Forklift Specialist / Senior Forklift Operator
This is for the person who takes pride in being the best forklift driver on the team – safe, fast, accurate and trusted with the big unloads and tricky loads.
 
Key duties:

• Unloading supplier trucks and containers efficiently and safely.
• Moving stock around the yard and warehouse using a range of forklift attachments.
• Supporting the yard team with heavy or complex loads.
• Helping maintain stock organisation and yard layout.
• Following and promoting best-practice health and safety.

Ideal background:

• Proven experience as a forklift operator in a busy yard or warehouse.
• Strong focus on safety, accuracy and efficiency.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically active environment.
• Good team player who others rely on when the pressure’s on.

Inwards Goods / Inventory Controller
This is the inwards goods superstar role – part computer whiz, part stock controller, part supplier liaison. You’ll make sure everything that comes in is received accurately, entered correctly and tracked from gate to shelf.
 
Key duties:

• Receiving and checking all incoming goods (yard and shop stock).
• Accurately entering stock into the system and labelling products.
• Managing RFAs, backorders, returns, credits and supplier discrepancies.
• Monitoring stock levels, running cycle counts and assisting with stocktakes.
• Liaising with suppliers about delivery issues, shortages and returns.
• Managing the inwards goods email inbox and day-to-day inventory queries.
• Assisting with yard work, including forklift unloading when required.

Ideal background:

If you come from a trade background or have great knowledge of building supplies that is a big bonus.

• Strong experience in inwards goods, receiving, inventory or storeperson roles.
• High attention to detail and excellent numeracy and system skills.
• Comfortable with computers, data entry and inventory software.
• Confident communicating with suppliers and internal teams.
• Forklift licence would be a bonus, but not essential if your systems skills are strong.

A current forklift licence and full NZ Class 1 licence are highly regarded, especially for the yard and forklift-focused roles.
 
Hours and location

• Location: Bromley/Woolston, Christchurch (onsite parking provided).
• Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, generally between 7:00 am – 5:30 pm.
• Saturday roster: Every second Saturday, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. (Yard Person)
• Start date: Immediate start available for the right people.
